Reading & Watching

  • Katie
    • Read The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee.  This is  YA historical fiction with too much going on for my taste.  This book had too many tropes, plus then tried to add a paranormal element that was just sort of hokey.  I would have liked the story better if it had 1-2 less tropes.
    • Read Before the Devil Breaks You by Libba Bray. This is the third book in the Diviners series.  I felt that it did not move the story along very much. They are still chasing the “man in the stovepipe hat” and dealing with ghosts.
    • Currently reading The Renegades by Marissa Meyer.  This is a new YA superhero series by the author. I am feeling very meh about it and might not finish.  It seems to be a combination with Batman (DC comics) elements and Marvel comic characters kinda put together.

Hurricane Relief Effort Giveaways (Somer’s ideas – open to modifications or suggestions)

  1. Monetary Donations
    1. One entry for every donation to a local organization (links in the Ravelry group) – need to post pic of receipt that shows the name of the organization, no need to show amount donated, no amount is too small
    2. Will run this through the fall, with a prize or prizes every month, to encourage people to give even after the news agencies move on
    3. If you would like to donate a prize, contact Somer, Darcy, or Katie (contact info to the right)
  2. Destash sale
    1. We will start a thread in the Ravelry group where we will offer items up for sale, 100% of proceeds going to hurricane relief. Specific items haven’t been decided on, but will include handspun, knitwear, and whatever else we think people may be interested in.

Reading & Watching

  • Katie
    • Read Addicted to the Duke by Bronwen Evans. Historical romance that is set at sea and involves opium addiction.
    • Finished The Crown’s Fate by Evelyn Skye. This is historical fantasy set in Imperial Russia. This is the sequel to The Crown’s Game , where two enchanters (magicians) must fight to the death to become the royal enchanter.
    • Read The Pearl Thief by Elizabeth Wein. This is sort of a prequel to Code Name Verity. Julie is a teenager (15 or so), and comes home a few days early for summer break without telling anyone.  She wanders off from the estate and mysteriously ends up in the hospital injured. YA historical fiction set before WWII, where Code Name verity is set in WWII.
    • Midnight Jewel by Richelle Mead and is #2 in  The Glittering Court series. The series is about three very different girls and their journey to the school and finding husbands and the mysteries of their backgrounds.  I didn’t like the first book very much (gave it one star! – see my review here), so I gambled on reading this one.
    • I was feeling the need for some vampires, so I read The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires by Molly Harper.  It is part romance, mystery, and suspense. Kind of a fluffy romance with a super alpha vampire and a fluffy heroine who runs a concierge service for vampires.
